I expected an evening of champagne bubbles. Tomescu serves up whiskey.” (David Larsen – Metro Magazine, New Zeeland).

On December 3, Alexandru Tomescu will perform excerpts from one if his most successful projects, Paganini – angel or demon? for the distinguished guests of the Permanent Mission of Romania to the United Nations (Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium).

Paganini’s Caprices are among the most difficult works written for violin. They constitute 80 minutes of paroxysm and glory, and few violinists dare to play Paganini nowadays, and even fewer seem willing to risk recording him. Among the violinists who rise to the challenge of the Complete Caprices we must mention Ruggiero Ricci, Salvatore Accardo, Itzhak Perlman, Midori, Michael Rabin, and, of course, Alexandru Tomescu.

Alexandru Tomescu considers his Paganini – angel or demon? project to be a turning point in his career. After studying in Switzerland with Tibor Varga and in the US with Eduard Schmieder, he returned to his native country of Romania to work towards his mission of demonstrating that classical music can be appreciated by everyone. Alexandru has performed in venues such as Paris’s Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Tokyo’s Metropolitan Art Space, and Carnegie Hall, appearing with conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Kurt Masur, and Christoph Eschenbach. He has since returned to Romania, where he committed himself to organizing national tours.

Receiving the Stradivarius Elder-Voicu violin in 2007, he promised he would familiarize a large number of the Romanian public to the sound of the splendid instrument. After an almost uninterrupted series of concerts in Romania and abroad, his name and the one of his instrument became perfect synonyms.
